When optimizing a web site, you have limited opportunities for onpage influence with the search engines. Besides having great content, the title tag of your web page is the single most important part of the page. In short, this means your title tag can make or break the page.

So how do you get the right title? Well to start with, let me say trial and error. The best way to create a title is to make it unique to each page of your site and make sure is includes the keyword or phrase you are optimizing the page to rank for. And to take that even further, place those words as close to the beginning of your title tag as possible, preferably with in the first four or five words.

Creating unique title tags is actually the simple part. The next thing to look for is how the page ranks. If you have the body of the page optimized well, you can experiment with various titles to see how it affects the results.

Before you can start changing the title, you must wait until the page has been indexed by the search engines. Just look at the cached date of the page to determine if the page has been revisited since the last time you made changes. If there is any question, wait another week or two before making further changes.

The changes you make to the title should be very slight. Add a word, change placement of a word or take a word out. Do NOT try to completely revise the title all at once. You need to be patient and really pay attention to how slight changes effect you placement in the SERPs for certain keywords.

If you created the title using the topic of the page from the start, then it can't be but so far off. After you've made several changes, you should know which combination achieves the highest placement for your keywords.

Once you know which one is the best, you can eliminate that from being your problem with placement. You should then do the same with your headlines (H1+) and description tag.

How many of you have done this with your web site and if so, what type of results did you encounter?

Let us know how it works and don't forget to take a good look at your headline tags as well. No one thing will give you to rankings. It is a combination of everything working together that makes a site rank better. You should also dig into your off-site SEO in terms of external links to your site. That is also a great way to increase rank for keywords that you need to increase ranking for. You can actually rank for keywords that are not even on your pages if you link to the site properly.
