Finding your plot can be the hardest point of building your ideal home, the contruction is generally straight foward, access and location are the main difficulties - don't rush, take your time to find exactly what you are after

You know the very first house I built was my own. You are correct in saying make sure you choose a good plot and then also making sure that your plans are laid out on the property in the correct manner. What I mean is often a floor plan is laid out and not in the fashion that the person is happy with in the end.

Another really obvious thing but worth mentioning it making sure your house faces the right way, you want ensure maximum sunlight, so look to build south facing!
