Why is it necessary to clean asphalt shingles?

An airborne algae simply known as "roof algae" can land on asphalt shingles without rhyme or reason. These algae feed on the crushed limestone that is used in the shingles and begins to thrive. Rain then spreads the alga down the roof causing unsightly black streaks.

One reason to have your roof cleaned is to remove the unsightly black stains and to increase your home's curb appeal. A good first impression on a house can add as much as 5-10% to the value of the home.

Also, by NOT having the roof cleaned the alga will lessen the longevity of the shingle roof by not allowing the shingles to reflect heat causing costly premature repairs and replacements.

The roofing manufacturers have recommended cleaners and low pressure methods that will not cause harm to the shingles. These effective methods not only remove the algae but kills it so it does not return in a short time.

If you are a contractor, be sure to use the recommended cleaners and the low pressure methods. NEVER use a pressure washer on asphalt shingles, this removes the shingle granules and deteriorates the shingles.
