In North Carolina the law requires contractors to be licensed general contractors in order to do jobs for $30,000.00 or more. I think that is a good policy but do all states have similar laws?

If you are from a different state than North Carolina, fill us in on what the law requires in your state.

In MA you need to have a license to do any work other than roofing, siding and I think windows. The state also requires you to be registered with the state if you do any home improvements. The license requirement is a little bit of a over kill for people that do small jobs and stay away from building.

In RI all you have ot do is pay $100 and give the state a copy of your insurance once a year. They do not have a license, the $100 is just for the registration.
