A few years ago, I took a few website design classes to help me learn more about designing a successful website, but after the class was completed, I began to ponder how much I had actually learned while attending, and what I had learned on my own. After thinking it all over, I could say that the classes did help me learn some neat design tricks and also served as a nice refresher, but I wouldn't really call it an essential.
