It is very important to seal off the area to be cleaned as the act of cleaning up the mold can cause mold spores to be disrupted and spread around your house, not a good idea. Seal off the affected area by putting up plastic around the doorways, vents, or other passageways to other parts of the house. If possible, place a fan on an outside facing window to create negative air pressure, which will cause any spores to flow outside. Once you have prepared the area you can begin the cleaning process.

Cleaning black mold is best handled by first mixing a bucket of one part detergent with ten parts water. Wear gloves, an OSHA approved mask, and use a scrub brush. Once the area has dried, repeat the above process but this time use bleach (again, ten to one ratios) to make sure all the mold has been destroyed. Thoroughly dry the affected area and make sure that all visible signs of mold have been eliminated. If any porous materials like clothing or books were part of the infestation you should now begin the process of disposing of these materials.
