One of the most common problems or mistakes made by contractors when creating links to their site is not using the proper link text for links they point to different pages of their site.
In order to get the most out of links, you must use text in the link, not an image, and the text must contain the keyword or phrase that the page it is pointing to is optimized to rank for. This means if you have a page that has been optimized to rank for the keyword phrase "Commercial Roofing Contractor", then when you make a link to that page it should contain the text "Commercial Roofing Contractor".
Now this is not a 100% rule since most pages are optimized to rank for more than one keyword or phrase, but every page is always optimized for only one primary keyword or phrase, whether you want it to be or not.
This is due to the fact that you can only have one Title Tag, one H1 Tag, one First Sentence and the position you place the keywords in the Keyword Tag define importance.
So that means you should create the majority of the links to each specific page using that Primary Keyword or Phrase. Once you get top rankings for that keyword or phrase, then start creating more links targeting the next most important keyword or phrase.
If you stick to this rule, your ranking will increase for your targeted terms and you will see better results across the board.
So how many of you actually practice this and do you actually go to the page you are going to link to to make sure you are using the right text link and that you don't already rank at the top for that? |

| I generally create links and let Mike tell me what I did wrong. I think that he might finally have me on the right path. |

I actually just started to figure this out on my own by looking at what others were doing in their own Signatures.
I've spent a lot of time analyzing Barry's site "Midwest Pro Wash" because we are in the same industry. It is very well put together, and very well optimized. He also does a great job at his off page optimization. I'm assuming under the advice of you all. |

So if I were to write www.myhammer.com as a link text it wouldnt really help the site ??
Wouldnt google automatically look for sites that have sufficient links to them in the category of contractors and service providers if you type something like flooring ? |

Using keyword-rich anchor text cultivates continuity with search engines as well as assists human visitors (the ones that pay the bills) in understanding which characteristics are expected on the destination page. If a link says blue shoes, then would expect to see blue shoes if they clicked it.
To search engines, keywords incubate context; so, by linking to a page enough times with a specific keyword, those links will earmark that page as a destination for those keywords.
A page with 100 internal pages linking to it and 25 inbound links from other websites, makes that page a candidate for the keywords contained in the links.
Depending on how structured the on page elements are, such as the title, meta description, if there are synonyms that create additional context within the on page content determine how that page fares in the search engine results pages.
By linking to a specific page multiple times, it produces a type of topical coherence (like a road map or blueprint) that shares its purpose with the rest of the website.
Thanks
