Did you know what works for Google doesn't necessarily work for Yahoo! or Live (MSN)? This is the main reason you see sites that rank in the top five for a given keyword on Yahoo! but can't be found on Google for that same keyword.

When you optimize your site, there are basics that you do for every site for every search engine. Then there are the parameters that you must fulfill with each search engine.

One way to find out how to meet the requirements of both is to research the sites that currently rank in the top five positions for the keyword or phrase you want to rank for. Analyze the titles, descriptions, "H" tags, how often they use the keyword on the page and what the density of usage is for the keyword. This will help you determine how the content on your site needs to be setup.

There are way too many factors to list here but this will help you with your onpage optimization. Working out your internal link structure will also play a big role in how your site ranks but again, way to much for a forum post.

So anyway, which search engine is your site optimized for? What percent of your traffic comes from Google and from Yahoo or MSN?

That's very interesting news. But I guess it makes sense because all the search engines are their own entity, so why should they follow the rules and do what their competitors are doing?

Since most people use Google, it would seem to make the most sense to optimize your site for Google. However, it would still be worth your time to submit to Yahoo and Bing just to get some traffic coming in.

I had done optimization for only Google and Yahoo search engines. Since more than 97% of internet traffic comes from these two sites. And the rest of the search engines do not hold much of a potential in this world.

I forgot to mention that I also have my site set up for Bing. I figure with Google, Yahoo and Bing, I've covered the big three on the Internet.

I don't quite follow how to optimize for the other search engines. Could you recommend a site or book that could spell it out for a newbie?

Heather, what I did was just search the Internet using the phrase, search engine optimization. From there you'll find a lot of stuff to read about. No need to buy anything.

Our site is optimized for Google, which by far is still the biggest search engine in terms of the number of search. But we are considering looking at optimizing for Bing, as well

Would appreciate your insights on “Effectiveness of B2B portals in the construction industry” for my
dissertation

Hi, this is karen, a final year undergraduate student. I am doing my dissertation on the effectiveness of vertical specific B2B portals and marketplaces in the US.

I need to understand the current status of B2B portals in the construction industry. I will appreciate if you could share your thoughts and feedback through the link below. It will take only 2 min. of your time.

I agree with you tongyun, as the majority of the internet traffic is from google only but if we have plans to tap all the sites then we may optimise the other search engines.

The most important component of search engine marketing is making your site easily discoverable in search results, and that requires a basic understanding of SEO. You don’t have to buy a book or take a class on the subject, though SEOmoz has a fantastic beginner’s guide to SEO that will get you up-to-speed.Hubspot offers a tool called Website Grader, which will provide you with a quick assessment of where your website is optimized for SEM and where it is not.

Thanks
