| For those of you that post at DIY sites and use links, do the links actually bring you leads or just traffic? |

I don't post a DIY sites but I wanted to answer you from a SEO stand point. First, traffic is generated from two different types of marketing; direct and indirect. It's like getting a window job from a yellow page ad and when you're doing the house, you pick up another job from someone down the street that saw your job sign. Did the job sign get you the job? Well, yes, but so did the yellow page ad because if it were not for the ad, you would have never had your sign up in the first place.
The same concept applies to every type of marketing, especially internet. The goal is to spread your name out to as many places as possible so no matter where a potential client browses, they find you.
Now back to the point. In almost every instance, the traffic you get from forums is just that, traffic. If you consider the amount of people that are in YOUR service area looking for the construction services YOU provide and then take the odds of that person looking online and finding one of the forums YOU made posts in and then the fact that they actually have to find a post YOU wrote that was compelling enough for them to actually read, and that informed them that YOU provide services in their area, odds are way against you!
This doesn't mean forum posts are worthless or a waste of time though. This is where indirect marketing comes in. You create a good signature with links to your site, post in topics related to the pages of your site you linked to with your signature and your overall rank will increase for your targeted keywords. Thus, you rank higher in the SERPs and make it easier for someone in your area to find you.
The whole key to doing this type of marketing is to join a variety of forums and use different signatures on each one. This makes your linking look natural to the search engines and will spread your presents across the internet, as the saying goes, don't put all your eggs in one basket. |

I've been posting on DIY sites longer than I have had a web-site so my motivation WAS not leads, just to help people. I understand how the links will help me in the long run, I just think it is funny how many hits my site gets from outside of my service area. In time someone from my service area might fine one
I need to fine some geo targeted DIY sites. |
