When your working outside and lookig to re-gloss your woodwork, get back to the wood, burn off the old paint - take care not to crack your glass, scrape it back, put on your undercoat and let it dry poplery before moving forward

What is the benefits of putting the wood back to the original state instead of doing as others have done and just re-coat it? I do not know much about this and wanted to know as I have a project with a large back porch made of wood.
