Hey, what would be the best kind of template for a contractor sight?

Left Menu?
Right Menu?
Menu at the top of the page above the banner?
Menu at the top below the banner?
Left and right?
Up and left?

What kind of banner?
Colorful, dark, bright?

I have done some web designing myself and what I will say is:

Left Menu navigation and a banner does good things for the overall looks. As for the color scheme, look for normal colors that work with white and can be more brighter but not overly bright. Stay away from dark colors if you have no experience.

Stay away from having the website colorful (don't use over 3 colors)

Most of all, keep it simple and elegant. It shows how professional your site is and how serious you are. Try not to use pictures of people in your sites too.

I think it really depends on what you want your website to do. I would never ad anything that is really not necessary and since most construction type websites are used primarily for advertising then I would not worry a whole lot about provided too much information on a site.
