Like many other budget conscious business owners I created my first web-site on my own. During the first year I spent a few hours a week trying to tweak it in order to produce some leads, 100’s of hours and no luck at all. I tried a PPC campaign and my site finally got some visitors but they all left my site without filling out a request for an estimate. In essence, I wasted 100’s of hours and had a site that I was to embarrassed to show to my colleges. I finally decided to change my host because I blamed my failure on the templates for website and not on my lack of experience. During my change of host I lost my site for a few weeks, while the site was not really bringing me any business it was on all of my ads and having it down was a nightmare. I knew at this point that I needed to hire a professional company to design and maintain my website. At this point I needed to make a list of goals:
1. Site 9 out of 10 people would say "wow! what's an impressive website", since people have different taste 9/10 is a fair.
2. A site that had a perfect mix of pictures and text. I wanted impressive pictures and text that really described who we are and what we do.
3. A site that produced leads (new clients) for my company. If the site was impressive enough people would fill out the request for estimate page and I would have high quality leads for free. At the time I was paying $50-$75 per lead that was generated by a lead company and sold to 3-20 other contractors. I wanted a site that produced leads just for me and not a bunch of other guys. I want people to see what my company and product are like and if they want us to fill out the form, no more tire kicking leads!
4. I wanted a web-site that would rank high on Google and the other search engines. Top listing provide free clicks (website visits) while PPC (paid listings) cost money and are filled with fraud issues (see Money 2006).
5. I wanted great service, I tell my clients that we sell a great product and a great service so I wanted a website company that could provide me with a great product (website) and great service. I was not looking for a fill out the complaint box and we will contact you in 2-5 days about your issue.
With all of these needs rattling in my head I started my search for a website company. I began searching on all of the contractor forums for websites and asking about how their website company matched their needs. I found a company called Floors To Go, which had a very impressive web site so I talked with the company owner. Within 30 minutes he had me convinced that I needed his designer and WebFirstCreations on my project. This was on a Thursday evening at 10 or 11pm, by 1am Mike Hall from WebFirstCreations had a rough draft of my new site for me to review. This is when I realized that I found one of the high priced companies, yup one of the $3000-$5000 website designers. Every time Mike told me that the price was only $600, I was waiting for the catch. The price that he quoted me was not a gimmick it was the actual price! I took this rough draft and showed it to several people that all agreed that I needed to proceed with this site. Mike said that my web-site would be complete by Sunday evening (less than 48 hours) and he stood by his commitment, the site was done on Sunday evening!
Over the next few months Mike spent about 5 hours a week with me on their site instant message forum. If I had questions or wanted to make a change my request would be answered the same day. Every month I would get a report on how my "keywords" were doing and I could see for myself how the site visits increased. I had a bunch of visits, they would actually look at my site's page and some of them would fill out my request for an estimate form. At this point I knew that I had found a perfect website company for my business. It is seldom that I refer a company to my friends, colleges or a stranger with WebFirstCreations I do not hesitate to refer them to everyone I know that needs a great website and excellent customer service.
